Christine Miele

We are saddened to announce the passing away of our dear and much loved friend, Christine Miele from Karava. Christine lost her battle with cancer the 7th August 2011. She will be remembered for her hospitality, positiveness, kindness and especially for the love of life itself. She will be greatly missed.

Our mother, Effie Zantiotis, was born on 8/5/1916 in Pireaus to Aphroditie and Panagioti Coroneos, (Faganas) - who originally came from Karavas, in Kythera. Mum was the 5th born in a family of 8 children – 4 boys and 4 girls.

At the age of 19 she was betrothed by proxy to our father, George Zantiotis (Zaunders) last son of Emmanuel and Eirene Zantiotis (Yerandis )from Vouno, Kythera.

Hugh Gilchrist was born in Sydney on 8 August 1916. He was educated at Edgecliffe Preparatory School, Sicup Place School Kent, and Cranbrook School. He received his tertiary education at Sydney University.

World War II saw him serving with the Australian Military Forces (1941-1943) and the Australian Imperial Forces (1943-1945), reaching the rank of Captain.

A Flag for Kythera. Proposal 4. A Flag for Kythera. Proposal 3. Utilising the symbol for womanhood as it is currently depicted.

This symbol is based on the original symbol for Aphrodite - Venus (Venus is the Romanised version of Kythera's Aphrodite).

The symbol for Venus, based on the even older Egyptian symbol of the ankh, is that which is now being used in the Western World for the symbol of womanhood, ie, a cross placed on a circle.

Here I have retained the symbol in its original form.
