at the back of the small village of kato hora, near mylopotamos, some of the homes and churches in the castle, have a look at the amount of rocks needed to build the church in the front of the photo. lot of work there!!

The Keystone Kato Hora The significant keystone in the top of the archway indicates that the arch was built by master stone masons of a superior class Peter Makarthis
Lion of St Mark The winged lion of St Mark, the Evangelist, protector of Venice, was the emblem of the Most Serene Republic. Beyond the city itself the lion was used in a variety of ways in all areas under Venetian dominion. The emblem of the lion is depicted in Nafplion and Crete on Venetian buildings and fortifications. Carved in marble or local limestone, they crowned the gateways and major sections of fortifications and public buildings. There were three main types of representation:

They were based on the Lancastrian system of education where one teacher was required to teach large numbers of students in one large hall. This photo was taken in 1985.

One of the many abandoned homes within the castle at Kato Hora. A feature of the architecture of these types of laika houses was the narrow external staircase which provided entry to the first floor, usually to a landing or balcony above.
