KATO CHORA ...

the village of kato chora near mylopotamos, kato chora was one of the islands fortress's to protect the inhabitants of invading pirates , the fortress is in the bottom of the photo , once the pirate era ceased the people that onced lived in the protected walls commenced the new communities of kato chora and mylopotamos, now you can walk through the desserted past fortress and  see how they lived some 600 years ago and also watch the magnificent sunset from the castle ..

The Lion of Saint Mark, Kato Chora

A weathered plaque of the symbol of Venice adorns the entrance of an ancient ruined residence in Kato Chora. The Latin inscription reads " May Peace be with you, Mark, my evangelist"

the castle !

just past the village of mylopotamos and down to the village of kato chora, you will find one of the main past fortresses of kythera [ the others are the settlement of paliochora  and  at chora ],on the left of this photo is the castle of kato chora with the village next to the castle , some of the buildings like houising , churches are in good condition considering the age of the settlement , you can also witness the various additions from differant rulers of the island throughout ...

The Kastro in Kato Hora

The lion of St Mark still stands guard over the entrance to the Venetian castle in Kato Hora in Mylopotamos. The fortress unfortunately is dominated by crumbling ruins although a number of churches have been preserved.

Beachside huts at Limionas

Below the village of Kato Hora is the beach at Limionas. The seaside huts are reputed to have been built by Saracen raiders who used the island as a staging base for raids on passing ships.
