Zacharias Panaretos, aged 10. Also known as Jim Panos or by me as Pappou. Every time I went to see Pappou he would give me a $2 coin from his pocket, and then I subsequently raided the fridge for rizogalo. We sat in the sun by the window as he did crosswords and generally appreciated the beauty of knowledge, while I ate rizogalo and wondered why Pappou was better than me at lego.

I believe this is a picture of town dignitaries, taken in 1910, at the time of the visit of the pre-eminent statesman of modern Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos (seated at the centre front). Ioannis Panaretos can be seen in the back row.
Portrait of Ioannis Demetrios Panaretos, father of Demetrios and grandfather of Eleni Cominos, Potamos. This image is an enlargement taken from a group picture of town dignitaries.
Mrs. Eleni Cominos of Potamos kindly allowed me to photograph some of her family pictures. This image shows her great-grandparents, Demetrios Vretos Panaretos seated at the left of the picture, his wife Kalliope also seated, their son Ioannis (standing), with baby Demetrios (Eleni's father sitting on the lap of Demetrios Snr.) The photograph was taken in 1910. Eleni confirmed that their family nick-name is 'notos.'

Theo is seated at the front of the picture. At the time he was 20 years old. The names of his companions are not known, but it is thought that they were fellow musicians, a bouzouki and a mandolin player. Theo played the violin. What was the occasion - they are dressed in suits, with sprigs of daphne in their button holes?
