Even through the murky windows of the Olympic plane flying off the island, the cavernous rock outcrop splitting the two Paliopoli beaches is visible. We hope to bring out a new book in 2007 - "Kythera from the Air" - filled with a hundred high-quality (non-murky-glass...) pictures of the island. If you are interested in the book please contact me at james@kythera-family.net.

The longest beach in Kythera. According to Mythology, this was the birthplace of Aphrodite (Venus) the ancient Godess of Love. I often wonder if Young Men of Kytherian background use this as a personal reference when chatting up young ladies!!!

This peaceful scene looking south belies the past. An enourmous wave of sea mud swept over this site 3500 years ago.A Minoan civilization which existed in the valley behind was destroyed. Pottery shards lie skattered in the dunes a stark reminder of the power of nature.

Aphrodites' beach - the more southerly of the beaches at Paliopoly. Looking north from the southern tip of the beach. At the top of the beach, visible below the grey mountain in the background, are the rocks separating the two Paliopoly beaches. There is a cave almost at the tip of that promitory, invisible from the outside. The crack in the rocks is just big enough to swim into - be careful to keep your feet close together or they'll be cut on the surrounding rocks. Once inside, it ...
