KYTHERA PHOTOGRAPHIC ENCOUNTERS 2009

The 8th Kythera Photographic Encounters will run from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th of September. The conference program will be in Greek, but non-Greek speakers may wish to attend exhibition openings, as well as some of the events which include an audiovisual element. These are listed below.

Thursday 24 September, 11.00-13.00
Young Photographers’ Encounters, Kythiraikos Syndesmos, Chora
Photographer Natasha Markidou talking about her personal work; the session includes projections and a discussion. Followed by a debate about the legality and ethics of intrusive and street photography with Nikos Panayotopoulos and others (in Greek only).

Friday 25 September, 10.30
Photography Conference, Kythiraikos Syndesmos, Chora
The first two events scheduled are a talk by photographer Aris Georgiou on his work, including a taped projection, and a film about the leading Greek photojournalist of the 1940s and 1950s, Dimitris Harissiadis.

Exhibition openings, Potamos, 20.30 onwards:
The annual Young Photographer’s Exhibition at the Old School (Astiki Scholi), Potamos (20.30), and a group exhibition of new photographs recording aspects of Greek social life, 1900-1960 (Potamos Cultural Centre).

Saturday 26 September, 10.30
Photography Conference, Kythiraikos Syndesmos, Chora
The first event is a presentation of A Play in Time, a new video work by the distinguished British photographer Susan Trangmar.
The last event (around 16.00) will be a presentation by Yiorgis Yerolimbos of new landscape photography produced during the course of a Fulbright Fellowship journey across the USA.

Exhibition openings:
• 20.00, Mercato, Chora: “Still lifes 2007-2009”, new work by Natasha Markidou.
• 21.00, Kamares, Kapsali: “Isola”, Group exhibition of mixed-media work by the Kytheriscus group of artists.
• 21.30, Zeidoros Arts Centre, Kapsali: solo exhibition by Marili Papadopoulou, winner of the 2008 Kythera Photographic Encounters Young Photographer’s award.

Attendance at all events is free.
