Many of the Greek community of Lockhart came fro the island of Kythera. This island had previously been called Cerego, which was an Italian name. People left the island because it was overpopulated and it was hard to make a living on it's rocky soils. They left also because their boys were conscripted into the army at 14 years of age, many dying in wars. Families would have to sneak out, either to America or Australia. In NSW they landed in Sydney and some moved into the country towns. The mainly became cafe owners and would send money home when they could, to bring others out. These new people would work in the cafe to pay for the cost of their ticket.
