Chrysanthy Mavromatis and son Minas

Minas Mavromatis was born about 1900 and migrated in his teenaged years to Australia were he found employment. Some years later, he migrated to Bakersfield, California, where he worked in the agriculture industry and also operated a cafe. In about 1950 he sent for his mother Chrysanthy (born about 1875) who had been widowed at an early age--her husband had been murdered by the Turks. She lived in Bakersfield into her 95th year. Minas, unmarried and who was an only child, lived into his eighties.

Chrysanthy was my mother's godmother! My daughter, Kyrani, was showing my mum this fabulous website last night when my mother saw this photo and exclaimed, "That's my nona!" Before my daughter even read about the photo, my mother told us the story about Chrysanthy's husband and living in Bakersfield. I remember meeting Mina many, many years ago when he visited Australia. My mother was born Kyrani Anastasopoulos in 1938. When she migrated to Australia in 1956 she shortened Kyrani to Anna.
