AMALIA is a Greek-German folk dance association founded in 1978 and based in Hagen/Germany. At the moment, AMALIA counts more than 100 members, many of whom dance in one of the four groups of performance that AMALIA maintains. AMALIA's main aim is to promote Greek culture, especially by preserving traditional Greek folk dances from all parts of the country. The AMALIA repertoire includes about 90 dances – a few from Kythera, too – which are performed regularly on a number of occasions in both Germany and Greece. Selection of references: • In 1997, AMALIA participated in the renowned Athen's Festival by sending their two best dancers to join an international Greek dance group in a performance in Herodes Attikus theatre. • In 2003, AMALIA was invited to Rodopolis/Athens to perform at the annual summer festival held there. • In 2004, AMALIA shared in the famous carnival festivities in Kozani with a dance performance. • In 2005, AMALIA danced in the renowned Mikis-Theodorakis theatre in Athens on the occasion of a three-day folklore festival hosted in Rendi, nearby Piraeus. AMALIA disposes of original Greek costumes, professionally tailored in Athens after the model of the costumes exhibited in Benaki Museum. The photo above was taken during a trip of AMALIA to Berlin, where the group was invited to perform Greek dances at the “Bundespresseball”, which is a top-class annual society event, featuring celebrities from politics, economy and media.
