Bingara: some of the people who brought back Peters and Co's 1930s Greek cafe

A few of the people who brought Peters and Co's 1936 cafe back to Bingara: Sandy McNaughton manager of the Roxy Theatre, prominent Bingara citizen Nancy Macinnes, and architect Michael McPhillips the principal of Magoffin Deakin.

Other members of the project committee included the Deputy Mayor of Gwydir Shire, Councillor Catherine Egan, Council's General Manager Max Eastcott, Peter Jones of the Bingara District Historical Society, John Wearne, Rick Hutton, David Rose and Leah Daley, as well as George Poulos and Peter Prineas.

Little could have been achieved without the contributions made by architects Tony Deakin and David Huntley, and especially builder Tim Russell of Dominico Blue and the members of his team.

Mr and Mrs Bob Kirk, Carly Rose and Mr Gordon Fletcher contributed original cafe fixtures. These have added greatly to the authenticity of the restoration.

Recognition is due to the first donors: James, Peter and Emanuel Aroney who gave $6,000 for the restoration of the Peters Cafe neon sign; Nick Politis who gave $5,000 for the Greek Museum; and to George and Lorraine Poulos who gave $15,000, also for the Museum.

Federal MP Peter Garrett, as Minister for Environment and Heritage, approved the grant for the cafe restoration, and the State Member for Northern Tablelands, Richard Torbay, has been an enthusiastic supporter of Bingara's Roxy project.
