Gilgandra. Miller Street. Early 1930's(?)
The shop on the right hand side, with the wooden gable and flag pole is part of the Western Stores, not yet purchased by Coles-Myer - because it is selling "Farm Machinery".
The car on the right is parked outside the then Imperial Hotel, later the Golden West. One shop further down from the Hotel, (moving away from where shot was taken) is 41 Miller Street, Jack Pentes' original Fruit Shop, later sold to Con George (Tzortzo)Poulos.
A further 4 shops along, at 33 Miller Street, is what was originally the Carlton Cafe, owned by Jack Pentes, and later George Peter (Proto)Psaltis's, Monterey Cafe.
The shops directly opposite the Western Stores on the left were purchased just prior to WWII, by Kytherian "Jack" Pentes.
Half the shop - next door to the wooden-gabled shop would later become Peter Sklavos's Victory Cafe. This was 65 Miller Street. The shop that is not in view at the front right of the photograph would later become Jack Pentes mixed business. Located at 69 Miller Street.
On the left hand side, further down from the Western Stores, where the second electricity pole is jutting into the air, is where Manual Poulos had the ABC cafe. This was 48 Miller Street.
One large picture theatre, and a laneway later was 42 Miller Street, were Con George Poulos would open the second of his fruitshops on 1959.
The history of the Kytherian presence in Gilgandra has been well explicated at:
