In the Bible, Ezekiel 27:7 identifies the reddish purple dye from the islands of Elishah. First-century Jewish historian Josephus applied the name of Elishah to the Halisaens (Aeolians), one of the parent branches of the Greek peoples. Kythera would certainly have been one of these islands providing the highly prized 'reddish purple' dye to the principal Phoenician seaport Tyre. This is an example of how the history of ancient Greece is intertwined with Bible history.
