Photograph taken by a journeyman photographer in Thessaloniki, almost certainly in garrison - the backcloth, of the kind which could be set up in the open air behind a chair, reads “Souvenir of Thessaloniki”. Every military camp had its freelance photographer who would turn up to take souvenir portraits such as this. Often they would use paper negatives which would be re-photographed, developed and fixed in a bucket, and handed over in a matter of minutes.
