Lazzareti

submitted by Jenny Dolman on 28.01.2009

My great grandfather Dimitre Lazzareti came from Kythera and was born about 1857. His father Constantine was a solicitor according to the marriage certificate.Dimitre came to Britain sometime before 1880 and was a sailor. If anyone knows this name(not sure of spelling)I would love to hear from you.

Hi Jenny, although I know nothing about your family, my greatgrandparents also came from Kythera and I have subsequently found out that my Greatgrandfather entered the UK, in 1891, at Liverpool. I'd be interested to know if you have managed to find out where your relative came into the UK and whether there's an archive anywhere in the UK that I might access with passenger lists of people entering the UK andcoming here, from Greece, without necessarily continuing their journey to the USA. I live in the UK.

Laura

Hi Jenny,

In researching my book "Britain's Greek islands: Kythera and the Ionian Islands 1809 to 1864" I came across Dr Demetrio Lazaretti who was a significant figure in Cerigo (Kythera) during the years of the British Protectorate. Much of the information I found is published in my book which will be launched in Sydney on 14 October 2009 (see Message Board for details). The Demetrio Lazaretti I refer to is obviously not your grandfather as he was of an earlier generation. However, the book also mentions Panajotti and Spiridon Lazaretti, who were young men at the time of the Crimean War (1864) and therefore contemporaries of your grandfather (although I can't tell you if or how they were related).

Regards,
Peter Prineas.
