Obtaining a Greek passport - advice please?!!

submitted by Kylie Flavell on 01.01.2010

Hello,

My mother is Greek Australian and lodged her registration in order to obtain a Greek passport about 6 months ago. I know it takes a while but I am desperate to also get my passport and was wondering if there is any way to speed up the process? Apparently now it is sitting in Hora awaiting approval.

The Brisbane Greek Consulate says it would be much faster if we were able to travel to Hora in person to get it stamped but unfortunately this is not possible at the moment.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions we would be SO grateful.

Thanks for your time.

Ring the office in Hora on 2736033219. (It will help immeasurably if you are a Greek speaker, or have a Greek speaker with you at the time you make the phone call.)

The three women who run the (human) records office there are extremely helpful, and as long as you can make yourelf understood, will put their hands on your application very quickly.

As long as your mother's father was registered in Kythera, this should not take "6 months". I assume your mother had her fathers PISTOPITIKO amongst the documents she lodged?

Keep in mind that the ability to pass on registration in Kythera is PATRILINEAL - it carries along the paternal line.

I assume you have been told this - but your mother being registered in Kythera does not pass onto you.

If your father is registered on Kythera (or another part of Greece) - THAT passes onto you!

What if your father is not Greek? ...or will never be registered in Greece?

Then your ability to gain a passport will "branch off" from the PISTOPITIKO of your mothers father.

His Pistoptiko will be the means by which you will apply for your registration.

You don't need to be waiting for your mother's pistopitiko -because that will not help you in the slightest?

One last comment - all this IS much easier if it is done on Kythera.

If you take ALL the requisite "Australian" documents with you - the PISTOPITIKO (of your grandfather) can often be provided in a day - and the whole process completed soon thereafter.
