theft of Kytherian treasures

submitted by Helen Cassimatis on 19.02.2005

I have just been reading in the Australian 19/02/05 about the charges against Iakovos Yiosakis of smuggling antiquities out of Kythera. Can anyone add any more to this? What exactly has been stolen? How much of Kytherian cultural heritage has been sold off? Has any of it been recovered?

Helen, I haven't read the report in the Australian of 19/02/05, but I understand that 13 of the most vanueable icons that were kept in Agios Yiannis Theologos in Hora for safe keeping, disappeared. Iakovos Yiosakis was in charge of Agios Theodoros and there were a number of incidents involving the majority of the Kytherian Community and Iakovos Yiosakis, who obviously was not a popular figure in Kythera for a number of reasons. If he has been charged of smugling antiquities out of Kythera, this was partly one of the problems, and the Kytherians were trying to ensure that he leaves Kythera, but he managed to take legal action against a number of them.He has gone from Kythera for some years now and most Kytherians that he accused for defamation have been cleared. It is a long story Helen. I understand that there is a lot more to it.
3rd March 2005. Helen I understand that Mr. Yiosakis is now in gaol(jail) awaiting trial.
