Tracing your family history on Kythera

submitted by James Victor Prineas on 23.07.2004

I received the email below from Kalie Zervos in July - the information in it is valuable to all Kytherians!

If you'd like to contact Kalie please send them to me and I will pass them onto her.

Kythera 23.07.04

Dear James,

I am currently on Kythera researching the Megaloconomos Family ( Caponas) and have been able to sucessful verify that this family goes back 8 generations from me.

I would like everyone to know that if they want to trace back there families they need to go up to the kastro in Hora and see Mrs Helen Coroneos. You can normally find her sitting in the entrance of the church of Mirtiditissa at the Kastro. She is so helpful and I would love her to get a special mention on the website. Her efforts along with a few others has so far resulted in the translation and transcribing of old documents and census books dating back to the Ventians into new books which helped me with my search for my Kytherian roots. I would advise the Aussie greeks who's greek is not up to sctrach (thankful I communicate quite well) to take a native or a greek speaker with them.

If there are families who think they have links to the Megaloconomos (Caponas) Family from Potamos & Pelagia , please advise me as I have a few gaps in the Tree.

Thanks and I hope to load up my entries when I get back to Australia in October.

Thanks

Kalie Zervos

As I'm unlikely to go to Greece and can't speak Greek, is there anyone with knowledge of the Catsoulis/Coroneo families that can help me with information, please? See my entry under Chris Goopy (nee Catsoulis). My grandmother was Chrisanthe Coroneo who married Theodore Catsoulis 1904. I would dearly like to trace a copy of their wedding certificate or learn where to search for this or birth details. Thank you, Chris

PLEASE NOTE.. Heartfelt thanks go to dear friends, Sue & John, who have obtained the above papers for me. I will be eternally grateful. Chris

Hi James, my name is Greg Perry, I live in Brisbane. i'd like to thank you for enabling this fantastic site! my grandfather was Angelo Megaloconomos (Caponas) from Potamos and Agia Pelagia. I would be happy to hear from Kalie Zervos, and hear more of what she has discovered and make her aware of this connection. My mother is Ruby Perry (maiden name hericlea megaloconomos). Ruby has two brothers all are still living in and around Brisbane - they are now in their eighties and doing well.

look forward to hearing more
Many thanks Greg Perry

Hi, not sure if my previous replies to this thread have made it, so I'll reply again just in case! My maiden name is Conomos and I have always been told it was shortened from Megaloconomos. My father's parents are from Potamos - Harry (dec'd) and Poppy Conomos migrated from Kythera to Sydney Australia in the 1930's where they had their 3 boys. The family has descended from there and are all in Australia. If this helps Kalie out, then I'm happy to help out more if I can. I'd love to get some more information on my family as I'm just starting out.
By the way, I'm thrilled to have stumbled across this site - it's great!!
Thanks,
Jodie

Hi Jodie
My name is Gary Conomos. My story as I know it is as follows. I am an Australian born member of the Megaloconomos family. My grandfather migrated to Australia in the early 1900s and owned businesses in Charleville and Stanthorpe before returning to Kythera with his partner, my grandmother Augusta, an Australian-German lady, daughter Ruby and son Michael. My grandmother returned to Australia pregnant with my father Peter. In the 1950s my uncle and my father's step brother Michael arrived in Australia and they had a business partnership operating a milk bar in Nundah, Brisbane. Michael and his wife Freda returned to Agia Pelagia in the 1970s. I was fortunate to be able to travel to Kythera in 1972 and meet my grandfather. My father followed in 1973 and met his father for the first time. Although my family is very Australian and I speak no Greek I have a great interest in learning more about my roots. I
My Aunty Ruby is 89 in September. Ruby is a really important person in my life, more important than ever now as I lost my mother just this month. She enjoys telling me a lot about her times in Kythera. Her sons Steven and Greg Perry are also interested in her story. Greg has submitted information and photographs to the website.
I also noticed somewhere on the website a message from you regarding Jan Conomos. Jan and I married in 1975 after travelling together in Europe including Kythera. We were divorced in 1983.
I intend to travel to Kythera again soon. In the meantime I would love to correspond with any Kytherians who would be able to share their stories of Kythera and perhaps my Greek family. I hope this information is able to help in some way.
Kindest regards to you and your loved ones.
Gary

Hi Greg
Isn't this a fantastic website! I have now spent many hours crawling (rather than surfing through it). Thanks for uploading the pix of Ruby, Mikie and Peter etc. I hope it leads to some further insight into our family.

Hi James and Kalie, I neglected to add before that my paternal grandmother , Chrisanthe Catsoulis (nee Coroneo), was the daughter of Stavroula Megalaconomos,of Potamos, who lived to the age of 104. Chrisanthe was one of 10 children, the first born in 1854, the last in 1882, my grandmother. I wonder if any of us who have replied are related? Chris

Hi Kalie
Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Discover Your Roots event in August last year. Although Greg (Perry) mentioned that you were visiting Kythera around that time I am unaware whether you were there either. We were able to piece together a fair amount of information about our branch which I believe Greg forwarded to you before you left. I am interested in your progress. For your information all three Australian born children of Evangelo ie Ruby, Michael and Peter are still around with Ruby celebrating her 90th birthday this year. I am hoping that we will be able to catch up sometime this year!
Regards. Gary
