Kominianika

The name Kominianika was carried by two settlements. The one in the south forms part of Pourko. The one in the northwest ceased to be called Kominianika as the name Ntouriánika prevailed. The area preserves the church of Saint George with a founder's inscription dating to 1275—a crucial period when the Venier family had been temporarily expelled and Kythera was again under Byzantine rule. The settlement became known as Ntouriánika but was previously Kominianika. In the Ottoman census of 1715, two settlements with this name appear, corresponding to today's Ntouriánika and Perlegianika. These settlements seem to be successors to the very old settlement of Mangounades. The Kominos surname is old on Kythera, certainly arriving before the 16th century. The settlement suffered from emigration, nearly becoming abandoned.
