Stathianika

A settlement close to and northeast of Karvounades, referenced in sources since the early 18th century. The homestead of the Stathis family at its current location must be older than the 16th century, as families with this surname can be traced on Kythera back to the 15th century. The family likely originated from Crete, where the surname appears in the 13th century. Sixteenth-century sources list the Stathis family among those of significant standing on Kythera. The family may have been invited by the Venier family in the mid-14th century as part of a drive to repopulate the island. In the Ottoman census of 1715, the church is listed as the parish church of Stathianika, with the Stathis family dominant, alongside the Kalokairinos family from Alexandrades and the Leontarakis family from Fratsia. The name derives from the surname Stathis.
