Diverse range of Heritage Award winners announced
Keeping with the National Trust’s commitment to advocate for the protection and subsidies for heritage cinemas and theatres
throughout NSW, The Saraton Theatre in Grafton has taken out one of the top Heritage Awards at today’s ceremony. Described
as one of the finest examples of such a building in Australia, the theatre was built by Greek immigrants and opened in 1926. It was
restored just last year by the sons of the original owners.
A diverse range of entries were honoured at the ceremony, held at The Westin Hotel in Sydney on Monday 4 April.
A total of 49 entries had been received, collectively valued at more than $70 million. While some projects were accessible to the
whole community, about half of all remaining projects were located in regional areas.
A significant number of entries had a strong educational component, with 15 submissions inclusive of the needs of special interest groups.
William Holmes á Court, CEO of the National Trust said “the calibre of the entries in this year’s awards has been exceptional.
Protecting Australia’s heritage is part of the character and identity of this country, and it’s outstanding to see the level of
commitment to protecting and conserving heritage in this state by large corporations, small companies, government bodies and
individuals.”
