National Trust Heritage Awards 2011 National Trust of Australia (NSW) http://www.nationaltrust.com.au/events/festival/heritageawards/ http://www.saraton.com Diverse range of Heritage Award winners announced Keeping with the National Trust’s commitment to advocate for the protection and subsidies for heritage cinemas and theatres throughout NSW, The Saraton Theatre in Grafton has taken out one of the top Heritage Awards at today’s ceremony. Described as one of the finest examples of such a building in Australia, the theatre was built by Greek immigrants and opened in 1926. It was restored just last year by the sons of the original owners. A diverse range of entries were honoured at the ceremony, held at The Westin Hotel in Sydney on Monday 4 April. A total of 49 entries had been received, collectively valued at more than $70 million. While some projects were accessible to the whole community, about half of all remaining projects were located in regional areas. A significant number of entries had a strong educational component, with 15 submissions inclusive of the needs of special interest groups. William Holmes á Court, CEO of the National Trust said “the calibre of the entries in this year’s awards has been exceptional. Protecting Australia’s heritage is part of the character and identity of this country, and it’s outstanding to see the level of commitment to protecting and conserving heritage in this state by large corporations, small companies, government bodies and individuals.” 2011 Heritage Awards Winners ***AWARD: Conservation Built Heritage for Project over $1 million AWARD CATEGORY: Corporate / Government ENTRY NAME: Saraton Theatre, Grafton AWARD RECIPIENT: Notaras Bros Entertainment P/L AWARD: Conservation Built Heritage for Project over $1 million AWARD CATEGORY: Community Groups ENTRY NAME: St James’ Church, King St Sydney – Spire/Tower Repairs AWARD RECIPIENT: Design 5 – Architects Pty Ltd AWARD: Conservation Built Heritage for Project under $1 million AWARD CATEGORY: Corporate / Government ENTRY NAME: Exeter Farm AWARD RECIPIENT: Design 5 – Architects / Historic Houses Trust AWARD: Conservation Landscape Heritage AWARD CATEGORY: Corporate / Government ENTRY NAME: Cultural Landscapes: A Practical Guide for Park Management AWARD RECIPIENT: NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water AWARD: Adaptive Re-use AWARD CATEGORY: Corporate / Government ENTRY NAME: Adaptive Re-use of Kiandra Courthouse & Chalet AWARD RECIPIENT: NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water AWARD: Adaptive Re-use AWARD CATEGORY: Community Groups ENTRY NAME: New Catering Facility AWARD RECIPIENT: Uralla Historical Society AWARD: Tourism Projects AWARD CATEGORY: Corporate / Government ENTRY NAME: Sydney Harbour YHA AWARD RECIPIENT: YHA Ltd AWARD: Interpretation and Presentation AWARD CATEGORY: Corporate / Government ENTRY NAME: Maitland Jewish Cemetery AWARD RECIPIENT: Maitland Regional Art Gallery AWARD: Interpretation and Presentation AWARD CATEGORY: Individuals ENTRY NAME: Urban Nation AWARD RECIPIENT: Robert Freestone AWARD: Education AWARD CATEGORY: Corporate / Government ENTRY NAME: The Big Dig Archaeology Education Centre AWARD RECIPIENT: YHA Ltd CATHY DONNELLY MEMORIAL AWARD RECIPIENT: Elizabeth Vines HOME ABOUT US ADVOCACY BUSHLAND MANAGEMENT CONSERVATION EVENTS GET INVOLVED PLACES TO VISIT SPECIAL OFFERS AWARD: Conservation – Energy Management ENTRY NAME: Sydney Town Hall Historic Interiors and Essential Services Upgrade AWARD RECIPIENT: Tanner Architects LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT: John Morris 2011 Heritage Awards Highly Commended ENTRY NAME: Fort Denison Conservation AWARD RECIPIENT: NSW Public Works / NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water ENTRY NAME: Fort Phillip Precinct AWARD RECIPIENT: NSW Public Works / Powerhouse Museum ENTRY NAME: Sydney Harbour Bridge Cranes Conservation AWARD RECIPIENT: International Conservation Services ENTRY NAME: St Peter’s Cathedral Armidale – Interior Lights AWARD RECIPIENT: Clive Lucas Stapleton & Partners ENTRY NAME: Rail Heritage Care AWARD RECIPIENT: RailCorp ENTRY NAME: Maitland Local Studies Strategy AWARD RECIPIENT: Maitland City Library / Maitland City Council ENTRY NAME: Tours of Haberfield: Past and Present Part Three AWARD RECIPIENT: Vincent Crow ENTRY NAME: Experience South Solitary Island AWARD RECIPIENT: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services ENTRY NAME: Painting the Rocks AWARD RECIPIENT: Historic Houses Trust of NSW ENTRY NAME: Faces in the Street – Portraits in Stone AWARD RECIPIENT: Government Architects Office / NSW Public Works ENTRY NAME: Our Island Home and ‘Beneath the Pines’ – Published Histories AWARD RECIPIENT: Government Architects Office ***ENTRY NAME: ‘Life in Australia’ Publication AWARD RECIPIENT: Kytherian World Heritage Fund ENTRY NAME: Rouse Hill House and Farm Schoolhouse AWARD RECIPIENT: Historic Houses Trust of NSW ENTRY NAME: Macquarie Towns Publication AWARD RECIPIENT: Heritage Council of NSW ENTRY NAME: Statue of James Meehan AWARD RECIPIENT: NSW Public Works / Land and Property Management Authority National Trust of Australia (New South Wales) GPO Box 518 Sydney, NSW 2001 Phone: +61 2 9258 0123 Fax: +61 2 9252 1264 National Trust: ACT | NT | QLD | SA | TAS | VIC | WA
