PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION RESULTS

In the parliamentary elections of 4 October, Kythera followed the national trend and voted for PASOK, the Panhellenic Socialist Party led by Adreas Papandreou, who now becomes the third member of his family to be elected Prime Minister.

PASOK won 1,196 votes or 42.40% of the total cast, as against 1,122 or 40.16% for New Democracy. This represents a very significant gain for PASOC among what is a traditionally conservative electorate; in the parliamentary elections of 2007, PASOK lost to ND with 975 votes against 1,597 (32.01%-52.43%).

Kythera is part of the the larger Piraeus A’ (central) constituency, and therefore does not elect a member of parliament on its own. Piraeus A’ elects a total of 6 deputies; these are now Dimitris Karydis and Manolis Bendeniotis for PASOK, Vassilis Michaliolakos for ND, Diamanto Manolakou for the hard-line Communist Party, Thodoros Dritsas for the Eurocommunists and Vaitsis Apostolatos for the far-right LAOS party.
