Cinema Research 1 : Appendix 1: NSW GREEK-AUSTRALIAN CINEMA EXHIBITORS known to have existed in the years before television reached country areas in c1962/63.
During the 1990's KEVIN CORK undertook extensive research into cinema's in Australia.
Tragically, he died before completing his work, but most of the chapters of his Thesis, were completed.
His wife and children have kindly given permission for his work to be reproduced.
Most Australian's would be unaware of the degree to which Greeks, and particularly Kytherian Greeks dominated cinema ownership in Australia - especially in New South Wales.
This is Appendix 1 of Kevin Cork's previously unpublished Ph.D thesis.
In Appendix 1 , Kevin Cork provides a brief background history for the 66 Greek, and Greek-Kytherian cinema owners he chose to be the subject of his study. He managed, whilst writing his Ph.D to follow most until their demise, or return to Greece.
The importance of the Hellenic and Kytherian contribution to Australian cinema ownership and history is clearly demonstrated in Appendix 1.
It is difficult to know how to pass on to Kytherians the results of Kevin Cork's important research's.
In the end, I felt that the results should be passed on in the most extensive way - i.e. in full re-publication of all Chapter's and Appendices.
Eventually all Chapters and Appendices will appear on the kythera-family web-site.
Other entries can be sourced by searching under "Cork" on the internal search engine.
I have also placed him under People, subsection, High Achievers, for reasons that become obvious once you have read the contents of his thesis.
You will notice that information for some entries is incomplete. If you can provide information that will complete such entries please post to the kythera-family web-site.
Appendix 1: NSW GREEK-AUSTRALIAN CINEMA EXHIBITORS known to have existed in the years before television reached country areas in c1962/63.
Compiled by Kevin Cork © 1996
The following pages represent a composite list of known New South Wales Greek-Australian cinema exhibitors in pre-television times (ie to c1962/63). It will easily be noted that the bulk of the exhibitors were situated in country areas. Only four (two in partnership) screened in Sydney suburbs, having come to Sydney after years of exhibiting in the country.
These pages do not include the names of theatre managers who were employed by the exhibitors. This task would be far too difficult to undertake.
The data is presented under the following headings:
Name; Born (ie date of birth); Born Where; To Aust. (date of arrival in Australia); Died & Where; Years in Cinema; Places & Cinemas.
Codes used: F = information supplied by family; A = information from archival material. Other codes should be self-explanatory.
In some cases, conflicting information (usually regarding dates) has arisen. In each case, all information has been given and notes as to origin.
Regarding names: Sometimes family spellings differ from other sources. When this has occurred, the spelling presented in official documents has been taken over family recollections. With surnames, a number of them were altered either before the people came to Australia or sometime after arrival. Where known, both names have been given, the person being listed under the name most commonly used.
The years of cinema operation/exhibition have been extracted from a variety of sources including official documents, film trade journals and family memorabilia/records and, in a few cases, memories.
It is possible that there were other NSW Greek-Australians involved with cinema exhibition. Hopefully, these people will be discovered in the near future.

OTHER NAMES FOUND DURING THE COURSE OF RESEARCH
BUT HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO ASCERTAIN ANYTHING ABOUT THEM
EXCEPT WHAT IT LISTED BELOW.
1. ANGELO CORONEO (per Emmanuel Conomos 1995) - Coroneo was a traveller who showed pictures in various towns, including Walgett. Lambros Conomos knew him to speak to. Believed to have died many years ago.
Found his son, Peter Coroneo, Coroneo's Nursery at Toowoomba. [Kevin did not make contact before death.]
2. BANGII (pronounced something like Bang-eye) - said to have operated films at Gleeson's Hall in Wauchope somewhere around 1919. Information from an undated and unsourced newspaper cutting filed under WAUCHOPE.
3. A. E. MAGENNIS - listed in The Film Weekly Annual Directory 1937 as exhibitor at Wingham Town Hall. This is the only listing for him and nothing else is known about him. Not even sure if this is the correct spelling.
4. JANIS TAMBAKIS - according to Mrs Chris Feros (21.10.1996) this man's son said that his father ran a cinema in western NSW sometime in the early days. If his father were still alive, he'd be about 100. Mother is about 80 and alive. The son is about 50. He thought the town where his father ran a cinema might have been Temora, Lake Cargelligo, Wagga Wagga or West Wyalong. Was an open air cinema. Afterwards, stayed with food shops. [Kevin could not make contact before his death.]
THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE, WHILE NOT INVOLVED DIRECTLY IN OPERATING CINEMAS PRIOR TO 1962/63, OWNED SPECIFIC CINEMA BUILDINGS.
