The Kytherian Association of Australia (KAA) has celebrated the feast day of Ayios Theothoros since its inception in 1922.

The responsibility to celebrate the feast day is enshrined in the Constitution of the KAA.

This year 40 Kytherians attended the Mass at St Catherines.

Historical sketch

The monastery of Ayios Theothoros on Kythera was built by craftsmen from Monemvasia at the place where a smaller one previously existed and where Saint Theodoros had lived like a hermit the 10th century. The Saint was born in Koroni and came to Kythera when the island was deserted. For this reason he is perceived by the Kytherians to be the one who brought life to the island. Ayios Theothoros died on the 12th of May 961 A.C. and his body was found intact three years later.

With the blessing of Agios Theodoros to all of you, XRONIA POLLA.

Holy Trinity, Greek Orthodox Church, Hobart, Tasmania

Holy Trinity Church is a grand, convict-built heritage-listed building in Hobart and dates from 1841 when the foundation stone was laid by Sir John Franklin (of North-West Passage fame). Standing proudly on a hilltop, Holy Trinity is Hobart's most prominent colonial structure and Christian landmark. For many historical, cultural and religious reasons it is one of the most important churches in Tasmania and Australia

Holy Trinity Church was designed as a place of Christian worship for the Church of England by convict architect James Blackburn, an Englishman who was transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1833 for forgery. The church is in the Gothic Revival style with cathedral-like proportions along a north-south axis and is regarded as perhaps his greatest work. It is convict built on a fine hilltop (Potter's Hill) with excellent townscape values.

On Sunday 10th February, 2013, the Church of Saint Haralambos, 4 Fleet Close, Tuggerah 2259, Central Coast, New South Wales, Australia celbrated the feast day of Ayios Haralambos.

The Church is in the process of being built, so the service was conducted under a very large tent-like structure which the Saint Haralambos Church Committee had constructed.

A number of buses from various parishes in Sydney ensured that the attendence at the ceremony was well in excess of 500 people.

This very dynamic Committee has achieved wonders over the past few years.

It is projected that the Church of Saint Haralambos will be completed by the end of this year (2013).

Fleet Close is off Reliance Drive, in the Tuggerah Business Park.

The place Saint Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, Burwood

The date Apri112, 2012 The time 10.30pm

I spent the whole Easter week last year at the Saint Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church in Burwood. It's an old, sandstone, former Methodist church, and the icons painted on the walls are amazing.

"This shot was taken at the evening service on Holy Thursday, or Great Thursday, when they celebrate the crucifiction. The priest took the cross, led a procession around the inside of the church and put the cross near the altar. Then the congregation went up, knelt down, crossed themselves and kissed the crucifix. In the Orthodox tradition Easter is the big one, the grand final week for the devout.

"I was baptised Greek Orthodox, but I'm lapsed now. Mum dragged me along as a kid but because the priests all chanted in Byzantine Greek, I didn't understand a thing. They've changed it a little these days, with Greek-Australian priests who repeat the Byzantine Greek in English.

"The oldies are the ones who really hold it together: they go every day during Easter week, three times a day, for two- or three-hour services. Burwood's quite a small church and at midnight on Easter Saturday there would have been about 3000 people spilling out on to the street, singing. It's very moving."
