George Creatha (Kritharis) O Katharos
as a young boy. (Rear of the pre-renovated Empire Cafe), Stanthorpe, Queensland.
In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade
And he carries a reminder of ev'ry glove that laid him down...
Simon & Garfunkel
As a young "new Australian" schoolboy, George was picked on, and beaten up regularly, when he first went to school.
A former pug(ilist) Charlie Feros was working for George's father Myna at the Empire at the time, and took pity on the boy. He taught George to fight. He taught him so well, that he went on to become a lightweight champion in the district. Needless to say the physical abuse perpetrated against him stopped.
Charlie Feros later went on to establish the Oyster Co in Brisbane, Queensland.
George, now 80 years of age, and still very physically fit, (he swims and "works out" every morning) lives with wife Maria, in Broadbeach, Queensland, a short walk from the beach.
