This from a Greek historical site http://www.istoria.gr/index.php?mod=articles&action=disArcArt&issue=63&id=669 (machine translation with some human edits): Panos Koroneos is one of the most wronged bibliographic military and political figures of modern Greek history. He is one of the few men who lived through almost all historical events in Greece in the 19th century. He starred in historical times, culminating in the Civil War in June 1863. The "Iouniana" as were known, were a key item in Greece at that time there was less self-seeker men but fortunately neither anadiotelon persons. Panos Koroneos was born in 1809 in Istanbul by parents of Kytherian origin. With the outbreak of the Greek revolution in 1821, the family was forced to move to Cythera. After the Revolution, the family Koronaiou returned to Constantinople (1830), but their son Panos went to Corfu to attend the Ionian Academy. At the age of 17 the Restless Young found in Nafplion, where he joined the regular army of the French philhellene Colonel Charles Favierou. The teen Panos participated in many major campaigns including the attempted conquest of the island from the forces of Favierou 1827. The next year the young rebel came under the command of another French officer, General Maison. The Anglo-French, following the protocol of London (July 1828), which ensured internationally Greek independence, sent a French corps under General Maison to expel the Turkish-Egyptian army of Ibrahim. Koroneos, having gained valuable experience and many wounds from the conflict, entered a scholarship to the newly established Academy on the recommendation of its own Capodistrias. In 1831 he was only 23 years old when he graduated among the first eight in faculty with the rank of second lieutenant of artillery. A few months later, however, the political and ideological mentor of the new time officer, John Kapodistrias, was killed in an ambush he devised against fanatical political opponents. Koroneos never forgot the offer, at both national and personal level [of] the first governor of Greece.
