Zakynthos might have its famous shipwreck ("navayio") but at Diakofti you can see the bow of the sunken Antiguan-flagged freighter, the "Nordland". The ship ran aground on the rocky islet of Fidonissi on 29 August 2000. For more information on the sinking and its aftermath go to www.itopf.com/nordland.PDF.

The Kavalini* house at the beautiful fishing village of Avlemonas was built in 1827 and is one of the landmark buildings there. Its main feature is the sundial over the entrance. * Sometimes also spelt Cavallini, Cavalinis & Cavalenes
The fertile, terraced hills of Karavas can be seen in the distance as you approach this beautiful town.
The British-built bridge at Potamos is the second largest masonry bridge on the island. It has recently been restored and the area below the bridge has been pleasantly landscaped.

The narrow alleys and laneways of Hora reflect the quaintness of the island's main town
The entrance to the gorge known as Kako Lagadi. It is through this gorge that the Ottoman pirate, Barbarossa, and his men sacked the town of Agios Dimitrios (Paliohora) in 1537.

As you make your way along the narrow roadway at Kato Hora in Mylopotamos you come across this old olive press - a reminder of the island's traditional dependence on the olive tree. I am indebted to Maxine Mitchell for correctly identifying this building.

Driving up the winding road from Kapsali to Hora I glanced through my side view mirror ...
The picturesque township of Aroniadika
140 years after Edward Lear I took this photo of the panorama depicted in Lear's sketch.
In 1863 the famous English satirist and artist, Edward Lear, travelled through the Ionian Islands and produced a series of sketches published as "Views in the Ionian Islands". This is the famous view of Kapsali and the castle at Hora.
The town square in Hora is ringed by a number of coffee shops. The yellow umbrella outside this cafe caught my eye.
Apart from bridges the British also built a number of Lancastrian schools on the island. This one, known as Milapidea, was built near Fatsathika and is over 180 years old. Note the Gothic style windows.
To get to Kaladi beach you follow the staircase ... almost to the end.
