This photo was taken by Maria Pentes on her first trip to Kythera in 1967.
She was staying with her yiayia and papou in Diakofti, and spent most of her time swimming at this beach.

Aphrodites' beach - the more southerly of the beaches at Paliopoly. Looking north from the southern tip of the beach.
At the top of the beach, visible below the grey mountain in the background, are the rocks separating the two Paliopoly beaches. There is a cave almost at the tip of that promitory, invisible from the outside. The crack in the rocks is just big enough to swim into - be careful to keep your feet close together or they'll be cut on the surrounding rocks. Once inside, it is a beautiful underlit cavern reminicent of a pirate story.
In the background is the mountain which is crowned by the monastery of Agia Moni.

Abstract though it is, this is the view from Mitata over a white-washed flat roof to Paliokastro, where battles were fought in ancient times, and a temple to Aphrodite or Helen of Troy stood until only a few hundred years ago
