Pentes & Gleesos Paper Bag. Early 1930's. Gilgandra, NSW.

I found this paper bag in the Gilgandra Rural Museum - not to be confused with the Coo-ee Heritage Centre just up the road - in November, 2005.

Partially destroyed by silverfish, it has subsequently been laminated - thus, preventing further damage.

The Pentes referred to on the paper bag, is John Pentes.

John Sklavos, adopted his Kytherian parachoukli (nickname) - "Pentes" - as his Australian surname. Supposedly it was easier for the Australians ...

Talbragar Street,
Dubbo. NSW. 2830.

Vibrant sandwich and takeaway shop in the centre of the business district of Dubbo.

Owned by Mr Tony Panaretos.

Tony is the son of Dimitri (James) (from Yerathika), and Maria Panaretos, who owned a Fish Shop in Dubbo for many decades.

The juices are made by the formula long employed by Kytherian cafes and milk bars.

The juices are just as refreshing.

Gilgandra. NSW. The Kytherian presence in the town. PART ONE.

....After selling the Carlton Cafe, (1939), Jack Pentes moved to Sydney, with a view to remaining there permanently. He tried to find a business, but WWII had started, and Sydney was in a state of chaos. He was advised to return to Gilgandra, where he opened a fruit shop at 41 Miller ...

George Psaltis's shop, and Jack Pente's shop, in Miller Street, Gilgandra, latter 1940's.

A wonderful photograph, a copy of which was given to me by Robyn Walton, editor of Coo-ee Calls in Gilgandra, in Nov 2005.

My guess is that a political rally is being held in the empty block, on the site of what would later become the Bank of New South Wales (Westpac) building.

From the style of cars in the street, my guess is that the time is the latter part of the 1940's.

Note the two working windmills, close to the centre of the town (upper ...

The Coo-ee marchers, marching from Miller Street, Gilgandra

...at the beginning of their march to Sydney on 10 October 1915

A plaque in Bridge Street commemorates the starting point of the first of the recruiting marches, the famous Coo-ee recruiting march, organised by the Hitchen brothers of Gilgandra.

The news of Australian casualties in Gallipoli had caused enlistment figures to dwindle and the brothers decided to organise a "snowballing" recruitment march to Sydney. Their plan was to 'Coo-ee' local men to recruitment ...

The interior of the Paris Cafe in Clermont, Queensland

...shows glass fronted counters and a refrigerator cabinet at the front, with tables and chairs in a dining area towards the back wall. Cafe staff wearing aprons stand near the dining tables. Glass fronted counters on the right hold confectionary items and a cash register. A man and a woman, possibly the cafe's owners, stand behind the counter. (Can you identify them?) Fans and lights hang from the centre of the ceiling.
