Inside the Paragon Cafe at Dalby, Queensland, ca. 1936.

Do you know the names of the man, woman and young boy behind the counter at the Paragon Cafe, Dalby, around 1936?

"Stacks of chocolate bars line the top of the counter above an assortment of lollies in the glass cabinet. Ornaments and toys are on the lower shelf of the counter. Rows of tinned food, jars and cardboard boxes line the shelves behind the family. A large sign to the right of the counter advertises Capstan cigarettes".

Gilgandra. Miller Street. Early 1930's(?)

The shop on the right hand side, with the wooden gable and flag pole is part of the Western Stores, not yet purchased by Coles-Myer - because it is selling "Farm Machinery".

The car on the right is parked outside the then Imperial Hotel, later the Golden West. One shop further down from the Hotel, (moving away from where shot was taken) is 41 Miller Street, Jack Pentes' original Fruit Shop, later sold to Con George (Tzortzo)Poulos.

A further 4 shops ...

A History of Kytherian businesses in Gilgandra

1910-2000

The Seven Ages of Man

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms;
Then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, ...

For most of the time the café was situated in Abbott St, on the site of today’s ‘Orchid Plaza’ shopping centre. It occupied two floors with a mezzanine area and provided its customers ...
